Alaric's terrific stoppage time winner earns Bluebirds first win of season
JD Cymru Premier – Phase 1
Briton Ferry Llansawel 0 - Haverfordwest County 1
Defender Alaric Jones scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner for Haverfordwest County against Llansawel Briton Ferry for his side’s first win of the season on a sweltering hot Sunday afternoon.
Both teams created chances which neither could convert, but in the 93
rd minute the visitors gabbed a crucial winner as a deep corner fell invitingly for Jones to score with a peach of a diving header to earn his side their first three points of the campaign.
The hosts came close to breaking the deadlock early on as Thomas Walters got on the end of a ball over the top but his shot struck the side netting
At the other end, Rhys Abbruzzese’s excellent cross from the left was met by a tame goal-bound header by Owain Jones as goalkeeper Will Fuller easily gathered.
Corey Hurford’s curling low direct free kick around the wall was saved down to his left by Bluebirds’ keeper Luc Rees.
Shortly after the break Ferry came close with some good inter play which led to Ruben Davies, who struck a low shot which the advancing Rees stopped, and minutes later a long throw fell to Davies again, who showed excellent skill to turn quickly and shoot on the volley from outside the box, which flew over the crossbar.
Dan Hawkins’ excellent defence-splitting ball fell to Ben Ahmun, whose low byline cross saw Ferry defender Kris Evans dramatically clear the danger with Ben Fawcett hot on his heels.
The hosts continued to press and again it was danger man Davies who broke as he saw his shot fly well over the bar when really he should have done better.
Deep in stoppage time Jones struck a dramatic late winner from a coroner with a terrific far-post header to secure victory at the Renewable Centre Stadium.
